This year’s theme at the 156th Beeton Fall Fair is the “Tractor”. Replacing the horse, the Tractor has changed over the years and has made things a lot different in the farming world. Today’s Tractor can pull loads up to what 100 horses could not pull. Early Tractors had low horsepower and steel wheels. Today, they have high horsepower, rubber tires, luxurious cabs with air conditioning and radios, and can be controlled by satellite or radar. In the 1930’s, 55% of the population were farmers and one farmer fed 10 people. Today, one farmer feeds about 144 people. That same farmer from 1930 took 15 to 30 hours of labour to produce 100 bushels of corn. Today’s farmer, with the help of the Tractor, can produce the same amount of bushels but in a lot less time – just under 3 hours. This is important especially since there are dramatically fewer farmers today – only about 2%. With the ever-increasing population and demands for more food, Tractors have made the farmers’ job more efficient and less labourous resulting in a longer lifespan.
